Therapies & Programmes for Addiction Treatment

Many people think that addiction recovery is just about detox treatment, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Drug, alcohol and behavioural addictions affect every part of your life so effective rehab programmes need to take a more comprehensive approach. Linwood House’s inpatient rehab programmes are made up of a wide range of proven therapies to help you understand what’s driving your addiction beneath the surface. This whole-person focus explores every recovery angle to give you a solid foundation for lasting recovery.

Treatment programmes - CBT therapy

What is therapy?

Therapy is simply about having the space to talk, reflect and be truly heard. It’s where you can begin to explore everything that’s happened in your life that brought you to a place where drugs, alcohol or addictive behaviours were able to overwhelm you.

In therapy, there is no pressure or judgement and no need to pretend you’re fine anymore. Whether it’s stress that has built up over time, painful past experiences or difficult emotions you haven’t known how to deal with, therapy helps you untangle it all at your own pace.

It is important to understand that rehab therapy isn’t about lying on a couch while someone nods and takes notes. It is an active process that allows you to talk things through, make sense of what’s going on in your head and slowly start putting the pieces back together.

Why are addiction therapies an important part of rehab?

Addiction reaches far beyond the physical, impacting your thoughts, feelings and the way you see the world and yourself. While detox treatment can clear your body of drugs and alcohol and break physical dependency, you need to address every aspect of addiction for lasting recovery. If you don’t, as soon as old triggers flare up again, you’re likely to relapse

Therapy helps resolve underlying issues at their core and teaches you how to deal with them without falling back into old habits. This enables you to start planning and living a life where you no longer want or need drugs, alcohol or addictive behaviours.

The growth of therapy usage in addiction treatment programmes

Over the past few decades, therapy has become a cornerstone of addiction treatment, both in the UK and worldwide. Where recovery was once centred solely on detox and abstinence, there’s now a far deeper understanding that addiction is closely linked to mental health, trauma, and emotional pain. As a result, modern treatment focuses on healing the whole person, not just managing their substance use.

In 2017, over 90% of addiction treatment centres in the U.S. were using evidence-based therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing. This shift is mirrored in the UK, including here at Linwood House, where we integrate proven therapeutic approaches into every stage of recovery.

Types of addiction treatment programmes

Everybody is different and will respond differently to different types of addiction therapy. That’s why Linwood House offers a range of addiction therapies so that you are sure to find ones that work well for you. These include:

Treatment at UKAT

Addiction treatment programmes at Linwood House and all our sister UKAT centres employ the above therapy techniques and many others. The goal is to make the most out of every minute you spend in inpatient rehab and give you the best possible start in your new life.

You will start with detox treatment with some of our therapies, helping with the emotional rollercoaster that withdrawal can cause. Then you will really dive into therapy during the next stages of treatment. Sometimes, therapy will occur in a group; other sessions will be your personal time with a dedicated therapist.

Everyone is different and our mix of therapies ensures there will be something that resonates with you. Our only advice is to go into every therapy session with an open, positive mind. There may be some therapies in our addiction treatment programmes which you don’t think will work for you. But you may be surprised! We have often seen clients make the biggest breakthroughs in therapy sessions that they weren’t sure about at first.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Linwood House’s rehab programmes last?
There is no one-size-fits-all timeline for therapy, as everyone heals at their own pace. That’s why we offer a choice of programmes at Linwood House, including two, four, eight and twelve-week stays. Whether you need a short reset or a longer stay to dig deeper, we will help you find the right fit for your recovery.
Can I choose which types of therapy I take part in?
At Linwood House, we ask everyone to try every therapy we offer because sometimes the ones you least expect are the most powerful. You might think something isn’t for you but keeping an open mind can open unexpected doors in your recovery. We are here to guide you through it all, with support every step of the way.
Are the same therapies offered in outpatient and inpatient rehab?
This really depends on where you receive treatment. For example, at Linwood House, individual therapy is a cornerstone of our addiction treatment programmes. This gives you personal time and space to work through your unique needs with your therapist. However, individual therapy is not available in NHS outpatient rehab because there aren’t enough resources. That’s why it’s important to carefully consider your recovery needs and goals before choosing a rehab programme.
