Benzodiazepine Addiction Treatment | Detox and rehab
If you are struggling to stop taking benzodiazepines, you are not alone. Getting through recovery alone is difficult, but with benzo rehab at Linwood House, we offer you the tools to overcome benzo addiction, leave substance abuse behind, and enjoy a sober future, with an inclusive treatment programme based on connection.
What is benzodiazepine addiction treatment?
Benzodiazepine addiction treatment is a broad programme that is carefully designed for recovery. The aims are to help you safely stop taking benzos, find out what keeps pulling you back into drug use and set you up to thrive in a sober, post-rehab life. At Linwood House, we do this in three clear steps, the first two as a resident in our centre and the third after you leave:
1. Benzodiazepine detox
This means tapering off benzodiazepines with our team carefully guiding you through any tough withdrawal symptoms.
2. Benzodiazepine rehab therapy
We will then take an honest look together at how and why benzo use spiralled and how to keep that from happening again.
3. Benzo relapse prevention
This involves relapse prevention planning, aftercare services and our Alumni Programme, all of which will help keep you benzo-free for the rest of your life.
Step 1: Benzodiazepine detox
If you are seeking help, you have probably already tried to give up benzos on your own. This means that you already know how unforgiving benzodiazepine withdrawal can be.
This can put a lot of people off trying again, but benzodiazepine detox at Linwood House is nothing like quitting at home. Right from the start, you will be cared for, backed up by a benzo detox plan to manage anything withdrawal throws your way. Because withdrawal can be unpredictable, we will then keep a close eye on how you’re doing and change things around as needed.
This might include nourishing meals, plenty of fluids to keep your strength up, and emotional support to help you through any difficult moments. You’ll stay with us during benzodiazepine detox so our team is always nearby—ready to offer extra care, guidance, or simply a listening ear whenever you need it.
Benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms and detox timeline
The truth is that benzodiazepine withdrawal can be tough, but just how tough it is depends on your health and the duration and extent of your benzo use. Some of the most common benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms include:
- Serious rebound insomnia
- Anxiety or even panic attacks
- Feeling shaky and sweaty
- Nausea and being sick
- Diarrhoea
- Aching muscles and general discomfort
- Getting irritated or upset easily
- Restlessness or agitation
- Very rarely, more serious symptoms like seizures, hallucinations or dangerous confusion
Benzodiazepine withdrawal can come on very quickly, and the first few days after stopping benzos will probably find you feeling anxious, jittery and unable to sleep.
As you get to the middle and end of week one, physical benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms will start to ratchet up with tremors, profuse sweating, muscle aches, and stomach upset.
Moving into week two, you will likely experience the worst of withdrawal. Without medical help, some people can even experience seizures and hallucinations, but these are rare. If you are at risk, don’t worry because Linwood House has a lot of experience mitigating any dangers.
Everything should start to calm down by week three, but you may still feel a bit anxious or irritable and have trouble sleeping in the days and weeks after. If this is the case, our team will help you with any stubborn symptoms until you are totally clear.
Why Is benzodiazepine rehab vital?
Prescription drug rehab goes beyond removing a substance from your body – although detox is a first and very vital part of recovery.
Benzodiazepine rehab will give you the time to learn more about yourself. It aims to address the mental health side of your relationship with benzos and recognises your set of circumstances and the underlying causes for starting drug use. Without rehabilitation and addressing the psychology behind the behaviour, people are more likely to attempt to cope with their unaddressed motivation for drug use by returning to it.
Benzo rehab also teaches you skills and tools to maintain your sobriety after you leave our treatment centre so that you may have a long-term recovery. The support of others who are recovering can also greatly help you.
Recovery requires willingness and dedication, but when you are fully committed, it can provide you with the basis of a new life. As our client KG shares:
“When I arrived, I was full of anger, anxiety and feeling very low. With the help of the therapists, the programme and my peers, my outlook on life has completely changed. My anxiety has dropped significantly over the weeks, I am taking responsibility for my actions and not depending on external things to fix my feelings.”
What are the available treatment options?
Linwood House’s benzodiazepine rehab involves inpatient treatment. Even though an outpatient programme may allow you to continue your routine and work or other responsibilities, it also comes with challenges. It can be hard to place all your focus on your recovery while being exposed and tempted to available benzodiazepines, and difficult to change your habits when you are in a familiar environment.
We know that recovery from benzo abuse requires time, dedication, and a caring support system. That is why our inpatient programme involves you residing in a safe, sober space with compassionate and experienced staff available to help 24/7. In an environment free from distraction, you will also meet others who are on the same path and share their insights.
